Jessica smirked at him as she cocked her head to the side. “What brings you to Sally’s?”
Rhett glanced from her to Morgan and back, clearly flustered. Morgan swallowed hard to shove down the jealousy rising in her heart.
“Just grabbing lunch,” he answered.
That was when Jessica’s glare finally met Morgan’s. As much as she tried not to, Morgan shrank back a bit, just like in high school. Jess was the stereotypical cheerleader, prom queen and all around most popular girl in the class. When she got the chance, she would torment Morgan and all the other shy girls, some to the point of tears.
“Oh, look. Morgan. I see you’re back in town. Whatever did you do to yourself, sweetheart?” Jessica took her in from head to toe. There was something there, something that seemed to incense Ms. Popularity. Was it the tattoos and the hair? Or was it that Morgan was standing beside Jessica’s ex, clearly about to have lunch with him?
It didn’t matter. Morgan didn’t have time for this childish bullshit. “A personal choice. I have a shop to run. If you’ll excuse me, Jess.”
Morgan stepped around the blonde and stormed past the planters of purple and pink blossoms. Their fragrance hung heavy in the air but it didn’t even register to Morgan. All she could feel was rage coursing through her.
She stopped suddenly when she heard Rhett’s voice behind her. She took a deep breath, focusing on the pressure that filled her lungs deep down to her diaphragm. She wanted to turn on him, remind him of how the little bitch betrayed his love.
But then again, just yesterday Morgan found him moments before he killed himself. He didn’t need the reminder of what Jess did to him. He definitely remembered.
