Rhett chuckled at her confession. He pushed off the counter until he was standing. “We’ll, before my sitter gets here, I need to run to the store and get something to eat.”
He watched her nibble at her lower lip. It made him want to take a bite of it himself. There was definitely some conflict going on in her head. “I could try to go with you. I should still make it in time.”
“Morgan, I know I worried you. I’m sorry about that. And I can’t say that I’m in a good place yet. From last night, we know that all too well that I’m not. But I promise you, nothing will happen to me if I go to the store. I will call you when I get back. Okay?”
She heaved a sigh then nodded. “Okay, that works for me.” She scuttled across the floor to him and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek. “I’m holding you to that call. If you don’t, I’m sending Marv.”
The jovial feeling that Rhett held in his heart flatlined. There was that asshole again. “Marv. Got it.”
She pointed her index finger at him. “Don’t go there. I would only call him instead of the cops because he knows people far more intimidating than the police. It would be a whole new definition of being scared straight.”
He laughed at her words. “Got it. I forgot that you don’t mess around.”
He gazed down at her big eyes. His breath caught in his throat. The chance was there to capture a kiss. He fantasized for a moment what it would feel like to have her lips pressed against his. He wondered what she tasted like.
Except he forgot that she wasn’t that into him. She saved his life. She was trying to get through the pain that crippled him. That didn’t mean that she felt the same about him as he did about her.
Instead he pecked her on the cheek like she did him. The simple gesture would have to get him by for now. He could have sworn that he heard her giggle.
