The day wore on in silence. The only sound was the buzz of her needle and the idle chit chat she had with her clients. All she got from Rhett were one word answers.
She heard him open up to the woman she was tattooing as she ascended the staircase to her apartment. She quickly brewed a cup of coffee. Once it was ready, she poured it into a mug and added a splash of cream.
It was a struggle to concentrate on Lydia’s arm as she embedded the bouquet of lilacs into her skin. That would happen with the little sleep she got. She listened to Rhett’s voice through the vents. It made her heart race. It was something she just couldn’t let go.
She pulled her cell from her back pocket and tapped the screen. She searched through her contacts. She hadn’t talked to Liz, her cousin, in months. Liz was a counselor at the VA, though. Maybe she could give Morgan some tips on how to help Rhett fight his demons.
She typed a quick text. Once she sent it, she gripped her mug in her hands and trotted back downstairs.
Rhett’s chatter froze silent as she stepped into the room. Returning to the desk, he snarled to himself. Morgan still smiled at him before she returned to Lydia’s flowers.
Morgan gave Lydia a quick hug as Rhett held out the care bag he put together for her.
Once they were alone, Morgan turned to him. “So, I’m going to call in an order to the Tailpipe. Does a burger and fried pickles work for you?”
Rhett swiped his cell phone off the desk. “I am a big boy, Morgan. I can handle being around alcohol. I’d like to go meet Marv.” He stormed across the room and threw open her already battered door.
Morgan sighed as she followed him, closing and locking the door behind her. “I’m sure he’s dying to meet you, too.”
