Freddy blinked his eyes open. He was surrounded by fluffy white pillows and covered by the softest down comforter he’d ever seen. He glanced around to find himself alone in the strange bedroom. The only sign of his missing lover was the words “I love you” written in lipstick on the mirror over the dresser.
He rubbed the sleep from his face as he sat up. The day before had gone quick. Even though he and Demeter ghosted from Las Vegas, they lost two hours with the time zone change. When they arrived, they left their bags in the foyer so she could introduce him to Dottie. The introduction was brief. Demeter wanted to make a big dinner for them so she could get to bed.
Not that they slept. They made long, passionate love all night. He tasted every inch of her flesh as she did his. The ritual he performed in Las Vegas drained his energy. The sexual marathon he indulged in with Demeter left him in the deepest slumber he had been in in decades.
He frowned at the vibration of his phone then smiled. Maybe Demeter was telling him where she was so he could meet her. He reached across the mattress and scooped up the cell.
Instead of Demeter, it said the sender was Hades. He couldn’t ever remember giving the lord of the dead his number, much less programmed Hades information into his phone. He scowled at the message.
We need to meet soon.
Freddy set the phone on the end table. He tossed the covers off then climbed off the bed in search of his clothes. He dug into his duffle until he found his briefs, a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. Once he was dressed, he descended the staircase in search of anyone else. He found a plate of fresh baked muffins and a note with his name and a heart on the island in the kitchen but not one living soul. He picked the muffin on the top then slipped outside.
He finally found Dottie outside the barn feeding apples from a bushel basket to the horses in the pasture. She smiled and nodded as he approached. “Good morning.”
“Good morning. Need any help?” Freddy offered.
“A strapping hunk like yourself? Sure.” Dottie wiped her hands off on her jeans then pet the horse she was feeding. “I’ve already cleaned the stables out. You haul the bales of hay towards the stalls and I’ll use the pitchfork to toss it in. It’ll take half the time it usually takes me. There’s a pair of leather work gloves over on the workbench. I’ll see you inside.”
“See you in a bit.” Freddy strode into the barn to find the gloves. Once he slipped them on, he searched for the bales. He already had three moved before Dottie met him inside.
“Wow-wee,” she exclaimed as she took off her hat to wipe her brow. “You didn’t even need direction.”

The salty smell of ocean water was the first thing to hit her followed by natural light and then a cold breeze. She stepped out of the cave then looked around.
Freddy leaned against a boulder as he looked out over the sea, his arms crossed over his chest. He was dressed in a thick, green sweater and a pair of jeans. The slight tinge of red in his hair was evident in the sunlight.
Demeter’s breath caught in her throat. The sight of him made her heart race. She approached him slowly. “You’re feeling better?”
“Almost normal,” he answered, his gaze still on the expanse of water before him.
Demeter frowned as she crossed the lush green grass to him. “Is everything alright?”
“Just trying to sort all this shit out in my mind.”
She bit her lower lip. “It seems we both withheld the truth from each other.”
He huffed. “Seems so, doesn’t it? I have a ton of questions that need to be answered.”
“As do I. Maybe we should take turns. You go first.”
He glared at her as he pulled a hand free and gestured up and down her body. “Is this your true form?”
“Yes. My turn. How did you withstand two of Zeus’s thunderbolts?”
She saw Freddy’s lips curl in a snarl. “Because I am a dark leprechaun.”
“I’m sorry. A what?”
“Nope. My turn. Why did you change your appearance?”
Demeter angled herself under his gaze. She rubbed his chest. “Because of that. Because of Iolaus.”
“Who?”
“It’s my turn. What is a dark leprechaun?”
“Let’s just say my side of the family has no interest in cobbling shoes or protecting the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. We’re more war minded. My turn. Who is Iolaus?”

The sounds of boot steps on the hardwood floor tore their attention from each other. Demeter whimpered as Zeus strode in from the dining room. His grin was evil. “Because I told her to. It was either that or I’ll end you like I ended Iasion.”
Freddy growled. “Who the fuck is Iasion?”
Demeter stepped around Freddy, putting herself between him and Zeus. “Get out of my house.”
“Get out of the way, Demeter,” Zeus warned.
“Like hell I will.”
“You would disobey your king?”
“In this instance, yes. What you want is merciless and unreasonable.”
He stopped and smiled at her. It was an evil grin. She watched as his gaze raked over her. “Really? Merciless and unreasonable? I think what I want is perfectly reasonable.”
“Zeus…”
The room blurred as she felt a pair of strong hands grip her hips and tug her away. Things didn’t fall back into focus until she was staring at Freddy’s broad back.
“You deal with me. Not her,” Freddy demanded.
Zeus raised his hands. “Very well, child.”
The King of the gods fired off a lightning bolt before Demeter could flinch. She covered her mouth with her hands but it didn’t stop the scream erupting from her throat as the shard pierced through Freddy’s chest.
She watched in horror as her lover dropped to a knee and cringed. He gasped a couple of times as he rubbed the singed spot on his coat.
Then Freddy cocked his chin up in defiance as he slowly rose back to his feet. “Is that the best you can do? You throw like a bitch.”
Demeter reached out to him. “Freddy, no.”
Zeus snarled before he struck again. This bolt was larger and brighter than the first, snapping and sizzling with electricity as it soared the short distance to its target.
Freddy’s eyes rolled into the back of his head as he crumpled to the ground on impact.
Demeter fell to her knees at his side and gathered him onto her lap. The energy that she used to maintain the illusion of her appearance was swallowed up by her grief. Tears wove down her perfect cheeks. Her clothes dissolved into the crimson chiton she used to wear on Olympus. The hair that fell past her shoulder was no longer streaked with gray.
She wiped her damp cheeks then looked up to find Zeus hovering over them.
“When will you learn, Demeter?” he questioned. “When will you realize who to belong to?”
“Get out,” she demanded through grit teeth.
“He’s still breathing. I’m not leaving until he’s dead.”
She cradled Freddy to her body. “Then you’ll have to kill me too. Because I refuse to exist without him.”
“As you wish.”
